As the website GameInformer reported, the ESRB required Deep Silver to remove red backdrop of the skull on the Risen 2 cover. Because it could possibly be interpreted as blood, as publisher Deep Silver confirmed to GameInformer. This would violate the ESRB’s marketing guidelines.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB in short is a self-regulatory organisation that is responsible for the age ratings in the USA, Canada and Mexico. While the ESRB rating is not actually mandatory, many stores will not sell games without an ESRB rating, making it the de-facto standard for North America. Hence, Deep Silver was forced to change the backdrop colour to a greenish blue.
