Contest "Girlfriend for a Gnome" (story) - Nirolf - (2/5)
4th Week Marcos and his bandits gang got me cornered today near the pass to the city. They almost beat me to death. I should have waited for the patrol to deliver the artifact, but I was too anxious to tell the Inquisitor myself and as quick as possible. What a relief! A peasant told me he saw a gnome running with a rusty necklace while I was unconscious. Apparently those bastards were looking just fore some gold after all. I found the cave where the little thief is hiding. There are tons of useless stuff lying around. The artifact must be here somewhere… No luck! I’m thinking the gnome still has it. I should hide inside and wait until I see him. I can’t believe my eyes! Four gnomes entered the cave, emptied their bags and then one of them blew some sort of a whistle making a loud and awkward noise. After a while a rope ladder dropped from a crack in the ceiling and another four gnomes climbed down and started searching through the stuff recently fetched. I see those other gnomes are different. They are just a little smaller and much thinner. The color of their skin is lighter, like a pale tone of gray and green. Also they do not wear any bags to carry stuff. Instead, their clothing is a mixture of colorful rags seamed together. All sort of things like small pieces of armor, mirrors and jewels are attached in a strange and unique fashion. I’m starting to think those are the gnome females. Every one search in the pile of things for something she likes and then she shows it to her male partner making a gesture that resembles joy or gratitude. Being absorbed in this strange spectacle I went to close and one of them saw me. They immediately started to scream and throw rocks at me. One of the female got so scared (or furious, as I can’t tell for sure) that she begin tossing and kicking the stuff just brought. I couldn’t mach their number so I had to ran deeper into the cave system. An earthquake suddenly started, dislocating chunks of stone and blocking me from the outside world… <Poor guy…> thinks the nameless while reading to the beginning of the diary found near the dead man. <At least I know where to look now.> “I’m trapped here for over a week. I’ve managed to survive so far thanks to the small opening above that lets the sun and the rain water inside. I’ve found some empty sheets of paper in my bag and I decided to write this journal, remembering the time spent on this cursed island from the moment I’ve disembarked the Inquisitor’s vessel…” |
